Provides complete & appropriate psychiatric evaluations for a wide variety of pain, surgical, chemical dependency, psychiatric & general medical/surgical patients & their families. Collaborates w/ treating physician/ psychiatric & allied health professional team to plan & direct each individual member's treatment program.
Essential Functions:
- Performs psychiatric, neurobehavioral &/or chemical dependency evaluation of patients w/ actual & suspected pain conditions & d! isorders, c&idates for implantable pain control devices (e.g.:! spinal cord stimulators, intrathecal pumps, etc.) as well as patients w/ psychiatric disorders, & pediatric & adult general medical patients w/ psychological symptoms
- Provides direct intervention w/patients, specific to pain issues, including psychotherapy &/or family therapy where indicated. Treatment may include direct intervention & program development as well as consultation w/ other professionals & family members &/or instruction in hypnoanalgesic techniques (e.g.: autogenic training, guided imagery, self hypnosis)
- Consults w/regard to behavioral rehabilitation for patients w/ pain disorders, e.g. failed low back syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndrome
- Act as a liaison between psychiatry & other medical departments to develop appropriate triage & treatment programs for patients w/ complex medical & psychological/psychosocial needs
- Participates in clinical activities w/ anesthesiologists, physiatrists, neurologists, internists,! pharmacists, nurses, physical therapists, licensed clinical social workers
- Monitors outcomes of behaviorally based reconditioning program using appropriate research design & methods
- Works w/ pain team on quality improvement of behaviorally based reconditioning program
- Prepares complete written assessment reports that may serve as legal documents
- Utilizes relevant social service agencies, private agencies & community organizations to meet the needs of the member's treatment;
- Provides clinical supervision to pre-doctoral psychology interns, postdoctoral psychology fellows, & other mental health trainees or medical residents as necessary
- In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating service behaviors & principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives
- Also accountable for consiste! ntly demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, & behaviors necess! ary to provide superior & culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, & to purchasers, contracted providers & vendors
Basic Qualifications:
- A minimum of 1 year clinical internship w/specialized training in health psychology or behavioral medicine
- A minimum of 1600 hours of formal post-doctoral training program in pain management in medical settings w/ anesthesiology, physical medicine &/or surgical services. Or, an equivalent combination of training, supervision & experience
- Ph.D. or Psy.D in psychology from an accredited university or professional school, including didactic & clinical training in pain management, health psychology & biological bases of behavior in clinical medicine
- Current valid license to practice psychology in the State of Colorado
- Documented experience dealing w/ a wide variety of pain, surgical, psychiatric, chemical dependency & general medical/s! urgical patients
- Knowledge of biofeedback as it relates to pain management
- Knowledge of tolerance, addiction & psuedoaddiction in pain patients
- Conversant in anatomy & physiology of pain, pharmacologic, surgical & procedural treatments for pain
- Knowledge of social services agencies, state regulations & APA standards as they relate to client treatment, patient rights & client/patient confidentiality, & other ethical issues
- Knowledge of worker's compensation system & short term disability system
- Demonstrated ability to function independently w/out direct clinical supervision
- Excellent interpersonal & communication skills
- Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment
